‘Policy Brief: Leveraging public procurement to promote sustainable diets in the European Union’ is the first policy brief in a series of briefing notes that outline using public procurement and financial disclosure as policy levers to shift to healthier and more climate-friendly diets to be published.

Putting sustainable food procurement policies into practice across the European Union and its Member States has the potential to tackle environmental and health challenges, support local production, shorten supply chains and give farmers the market signals they need to invest in improved production methods. Facilitating this shift will require action at different governance levels. This brief includes summarized key recommendations at the EU level, Member State level, and subnational level.

These briefing notes are in support of the event series ‘Promoting Dietary Shifts For a Healthy Climate’, in coordination with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) and Climate Focus, supported by Climate and Land Use Alliance (CLUA), and in cooperation with the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).
