Gabriela Martinez

Gabriela is a consultant at Climate Focus. Her focus is on research and advisory services concerning nature-based solutions and voluntary carbon markets. 

Gabriela's role before joining Climate Focus was at the World Economic Forum. Here she convened the Natural Climate Solutions Alliance, in conjunction with the World Business Council on Sustainable Development (WBCSD). Her work involved collaborations with companies, non-profits, coalitions, and standards to identify barriers and opportunities to promote and incorporate natural climate solution credits within corporate climate strategies. The ultimate aim being the acceleration of the protection and restoration of naturally occurring carbon sinks. 

Prior to this, she worked with the Colombian team from South Pole. This role entailed examination of biodiversity credits and their adoption in European markets. Other roles included supporting research on conservation finance at Wolfs Company and working with the United Nations Environmental Programme in Washington, D.C. focusing on policy and communications. Before moving to Europe, Gabriela worked with Central American governments, supported project development in the region, and volunteered in India for a year in the Himalayan mountains and with coastal communities in the Andaman Sea.

Gabriela holds a M.A. in Environmental Management from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She also holds a M.A. in Environment and Society, in addition to a Postgraduate degree in Carbon Management, from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. Her Bachelor's degree is in Social Sciences, from the University of Palermo, Argentina.

Gabriela speaks Spanish and English and is an avid nature lover. In her free time, Gabriela can be found in the mountains snowboarding or rock climbing, in the ocean diving or windsurfing, or bird watching in the middle of the jungle of her home country Guatemala.
