Assessing Public and Private Financing of the Low Carbon Development in the Orinoquía Region

Assessing Public and Private Financing of the Low Carbon Development in the Orinoquía Region

Colombia. Copyright: Stephanie Roe

Climate Focus, in conjunction with Centro de Estudios de la Orinoquia from la Universidad de los Andes, is working to support the Government of Colombia and the World Bank (commissioned by the BioCarbon Fund) in identifying low emissions development opportunities in the Orinoquía region of Colombia.

Recently, the region has experienced a significant economic boom driven by the production of oil and expansion of agricultural activities. The Government of Colombia plans to support the production of traditional agricultural commodities in the region, as well as the introduction of new agricultural crops, in a sustainable manner. This project makes the Orinoquía one of just three pilot regions in the world working on large-scale low emissions development and the only one in Latin America to take on such a feat.

Project activities include mapping active private sector actors, investment opportunities and public and private sources of financing and incentive mechanisms in the region, as well as analysing barriers and investment gaps that exist to provide recommendations to enhance incentive mechanisms.
